“You Bought the Technology… So Where’s the ROI?” Jo Penn on Loyalty, Personalization Maturity, and AI Decisioning
Why do so many organizations invest heavily in Martech and loyalty, yet struggle to see the return? On the Everybody Hates Your Brand podcast, Bond’s Jo Penn shares a candid, practitioner-led view on personalization maturity, AI decisioning, loyalty optimization, and what remains stubbornly human.
Episode summary
Marketing, CRM and loyalty leaders face a familiar frustration: significant investment in technology, but returns that don’t match the promise. In conversation with host Rob Voase, Jo tackles that tension head-on.
Her diagnosis is refreshingly direct: buying the technology is not the same as being ready to use it. Bond’s personalization maturity framework identifies the pillars organizations need in place to reach genuine personalization, and where they’re falling behind. Often, the blocker isn’t the platform at all.
On loyalty, Jo describes a clear market shift. Clients rarely arrive asking for a new scheme; they ask how to optimize the one they have, with partnership strategy emerging as one of the most significant new levers in the industry.
On AI, Jo is both an enthusiast and a realist. She shares how Bond applies it to defined problems—QA, prototyping, international rollout, data tasks—, and speaks personally about how, as someone with dyslexia, AI has transformed her confidence in written communication. But she’s equally clear on guardrails: transparency in usage, walled-off LLMs so client data never trains external models, and rewarding meaningful application rather than usage for its own sake.
And on what hasn’t changed? Talent. “Super, super smart people still supersede anything coming at us from the world of AI.” The best agencies remain collections of the most creative people: in artistry, technology and data alike.
